Genuine Subaru 10921AA231 AVCS Oil Control Valve

Check engine light with code P0011 or P0021 — “intake camshaft timing over-advanced”? On Subaru FB and FA engines this very often traces back to the AVCS oil control valve: the solenoid fails or its filter screen clogs, and the cam phaser can no longer hold correct timing. Left alone, timing codes can mean hesitation, poor running, and unnecessary strain on the engine.

The Subaru 10921AA231 is the genuine AVCS oil control valve (intake VVT solenoid, “spool valve”) — the updated factory part that supersedes the earlier 10921AA230 and 10921AA220.

Common Symptoms of a Failing Oil Control Valve

  • Check engine light with P0011 or P0021 (intake camshaft timing over-advanced, bank 1 / bank 2)
  • Codes P000A–P000D (camshaft position slow response)
  • Hesitation or jerking on acceleration
  • Rough running while the ECU struggles to control cam timing

A common root cause is a clogged filter screen on the valve or a failed solenoid.

Product Type

AVCS Oil Control Valve / Variable Valve Timing (VVT) Intake Solenoid

Function

The oil control valve regulates oil pressure to the intake camshaft AVCS phaser. The engine computer pulses the solenoid to advance or retard cam timing on the fly. Each engine uses two of these valves — one per bank — and they are identical, which allows a classic diagnostic trick: swap the bank 1 and bank 2 valves and see whether the trouble code follows the valve.

FAQ

Will this fix my P0011 / P0021 code?

A failed or clogged AVCS oil control valve is one of the most common causes of P0011 and P0021 on Subaru FB/FA engines. Diagnose first — a swap test between banks quickly shows whether the valve is at fault.

Do I need one valve or two?

Each engine has two identical valves (bank 1 and bank 2). This listing is for one valve — order two to replace both sides.

Is this a genuine Subaru part?

Yes. Genuine Subaru part 10921AA231, the updated version that replaces 10921AA230 and 10921AA220.

My old valve is 10921AA220 or 10921AA230 — is this the right replacement?

Yes. Subaru superseded both earlier numbers to 10921AA231; the update is referenced in TSB 02-170-17R.

Which engines does it fit?

The FB 2.0/2.5 and FA family, including the FA24 turbo in the 2022+ WRX and 2022+ BRZ. Verify with your VIN before ordering.
